Plenary Assembly of the Presidents of the Bar Associations of Greece
The “Plenary Assembly of the Presidents of the Bar Associations of Greece” is the coordinating body of the country’s Bar Associations.
- The Plenary Assembly is the highest representative body of the country’s lawyers.
- The independence and autonomy of the country’s Bar Associations, as stipulated in Article 89 of the Lawyers’ Code (Κώδικας Δικηγόρων), are not affected by the operation, proposals and decisions of the Plenary of Presidents. The decisions of the Plenary constitute guidelines for decision-making by the bodies of the country’s Bar Associations and are utilized to address their problems and achieve their objectives.
- By right, upon their election, the Presidents of the Bar Associations of the country become the members of the Plenary Assembly. In the event of his/her absence, the President of the respective Association may appoint a member of the Board of Directors to replace him/her.
- The Plenary is based in Athens, where it maintains offices, administrative and support staff. With regard to the staff of the Plenary, the provisions of article 95, paragraph 5, of the Lawyers’ Code apply.
- The Plenary is headed by a three-member Presidium, which consists of the Presidents of the Bar Associations of Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus. Its President is the President of the Athens Bar Association, who also represents it.
- The Plenary Assembly’s resources are the annual subscription of each Bar Association, which is determined by a decision of the Plenary Assembly. Its operation is regulated by regulations, which are drawn up by a seven-member committee and approved by the Plenary Assembly with a majority of its members.
The task of the Plenary is to coordinate the activities of the Bar Associations and to represent the legal profession as a whole. The work of the Plenary includes in particular:
- The study of problems related to the practice of law and the promotion of solutions.
- The care of issues concerning the organization and operation of the judicial system.
- The study and processing of issues related to legislation and case law.
- Representation of the legal profession before authorities, international organizations and the bodies of the European Communities.
- The creation and operation by the Plenary or in collaboration with other state or non-state bodies, of a legal information bank.
- Cooperation and coordination with scientific associations in the country, abroad and especially in the European Union.
- The organization of conferences of the country’s Bar Associations.
- Intervention in issues of national or broader social interest.
- Whatever else is assigned to it by the Code.
The “Plenary Assembly of the Presidents of the Bar Associations of Greece” is a legal advisor or advisor to the Greek State.

Cyprus Bar Association
The Cyprus Bar Association is the professional body of lawyers with over 4300 members. Cyprus Bar Association was established under the Advocates Law Chapter 2 in 1955 and it has been operating since then. All the necessary work of the Cyprus Bar Association, including administrative matters, was done voluntarily by the members of the Board and the President’s office. In 1992, the Board decided to employ a full time employee to do this work.
Over the years and due to legislative reforms the Council of the CBA was appointed as a Supervisory Authority in matters of Money Laundering and thus created the Supervisory Control Department which deals inter alia with onsite inspections.
The Association also provides free and non-profit access to Cypriot and international sources of law through its website “CyLaw”. For this purpose, the CBA hired staff who updates the site in a daily basis.
Last but not least, we organize seminars on European Law and other important matters, in order lawyers to be more informed on how European law works and keep them updated on recent updates.
One of our main goals is to provide the best possible service to our Lawyers in order to feel that our ourganization supports and helps them to every inquiry that they have.
According to Advocates Law, the Cyprus Bar Association, the Disciplinary Board and the Legal Council, constitute the bodies regulating the legal profession in Cyprus.
Local Bar Association comprise all lawyers practising the profession in each District. There are six Local Bar Associations one for each of the six Districts of Cyprus. Cyprus Bar Association is independant from the Local Bar Association as fas af the election of its president and the number of its members are concerned but also its competences. Cyprus Bar Association constitues the Union of the lawyers practising the legal profession in Cyprus.
The Cyprus Bar Council consists of:
The President, who is elected by the General Meeting of the Bar Association, taking place every three years.
The Chairmen of the District Bar Associations and one member from each District elected as representative to the Bar Council.
Four members elected by the General Meeting of the Bar Association.
The Attorney General is considered as the honor President of the Bar Council.

Hellenic Australian
Lawyers Association
The Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association (HAL) comprises Australian lawyers, judicial officers, law students and others who have a Hellenic background, or if not of Hellenic background, are philhellenes. HAL provides opportunities for members to engage in professional activities in an environment that celebrates Hellenic ideals and promotes cultural harmony and diversity.
HAL was launched in the Supreme Court Victoria Library on 11 April 2014 by the Chief Justice of South Australia and National Patron of HAL, Chief Justice Kourakis. In attendance were the Chief Justice of Victoria, Chief Justice Warren, and other eminent jurists and philhellenes from Victoria and interstate.
On 31 October 2014 the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AO, launched HAL in South Australia in Old Parliament House.
On 30 January 2015 Chief Justice Robert French AC launched HAL in Queensland in the Supreme Court of that State.
On 9 October 2015 the Northern Territory Chapter of HAL was launched by Chief Justice Riley.
The Tasmanian chapter of HAL was launched on 27 November by Chief Justice Blow OAM, the Tasmanian Patron of HAL.
On 12 February 2016 the Western Australian Chapter of HAL was launched by Chief Justice Wayne Martin AC, the patron of the Chapter.
The launch of HAL in the Australian Capital Territory was held on 15 April 2016. Chief Justice of the ACT, Helen Murrell, is Patron of the ACT Chapter.
On 11 November 2016 the NSW Chapter of HAL was launched by Chief Justice Tom Bathurst AC. The Patron of the NSW Chapter is The Honourable Justice Melissa Perry, Justice of the Federal Court of Australia.
The Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association has now hosted high level educational events in each State and Territory of Australia, having become a truly National Association.
In July 2018 HAL was privileged to host an International Legal Conference in Rhodes Greece.
The Association was honoured that the President of the Hellenic Republic officially opened the Conference.
HAL was also privileged that the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Hon Susan Kiefel AC, was the Keynote Speaker and that other distinguished jurists and scholars spoke on subjects relating to the theme “Contemporary Legal Issues and the Influence of Hellenism”.
Membership of the Association continues to grow strongly around Australia and HAL is delighted that so many lawyers who are not of Greek background, but are Philhellenes, have become members.

The Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York was founded to establish a network of attorneys of Hellenic descent and to provide opportunities for professional development. The association currently has thousands of contacts and members in the community including attorneys, judges and law students.
